Every one of the twenty-four posters in Collection I is his. He is the reason they still stop you in the street a hundred and twenty years later.

What he changed그가 바꾼 것

Before Cappiello, a poster was a small painting pinned to a wall — a detailed scene, a crowd of figures, text woven through it. You had to stand still to read it. Cappiello threw all of that out. He put one figure on a flat dark ground, in a colour that had no business being there: a woman in green flame carrying a pocket watch, a devil in red riding a bottle, a horse the colour of nothing in nature.

The reason was practical. Paris was filling with trams, omnibuses and motor cars, and a poster had perhaps two seconds to work. A single silhouette against black could be read at speed and from across a boulevard. It could also be remembered — which was the part nobody had solved before him.

He never went to art school. He arrived in Paris in 1897 meaning to stay a month, and stayed thirty-five years. His first work there was caricature — actresses and writers for Le Rire, Le Cri de Paris, later Le Figaro. That training shows in the posters: he was not drawing a person, he was drawing the one gesture that made a person recognisable from across a room.

Collection I spans roughly 1900 to 1927 — his Vercasson years and the Devambez period that followed. Fourteen date from before 1914; ten are from the 1920s.
